Bangladesh will not export hilsa fish to India on the occasion of Durga Puja in October, according to a top commerce ministry official, discontinuing a long-standing tradition of the country as a “goodwill gesture” to its neighbour.

The price of hilsa shot up in the local market, influenced by demand for exports of the fish to India ahead of Durga puja, one of the biggest Hindu religious festivals, to be celebrated in the third week of October.

The permission will remain in place until October 30
