BNP and several other parties have voiced concern over reported  developments regarding a UN-backed humanitarian corridor into Myanmar’s war-torn Rakhine State, calling it a potential threat to national sovereignty and regional security.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the interim government has not discussed the so-called “humanitarian corridor” with the UN or any other entity, but it would be willing to provide logistics support to the transportation of aid to Rakhine state through Bangladesh.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday expressed strong reservations regarding the government’s decision in principle to provide a humanitarian corridor to Myanmar’s conflict-ridden Rakhine state.

Dhaka needs to carefully consider the geopolitical and security implications before agreeing to a humanitarian corridor to Myanmar, which was discussed during the UN secretary-general’s Bangladesh visit, say foreign policy and security analysts.
