A special committee led by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon has been formed to remove illegal vehicles off the streets and free footpaths from grabbers in next two months.

The human haulier, which collided head-on with a bus killing 15 people on Saturday, was actually a microbus illegally modified to seat passengers double its capacity.

In an utter disregard for multiple government and court orders, locally-made three-wheelers and other low-speed vehicles continue to operate on national highways, causing frequent road crashes.

Over 55,000 vehicles, including 3,740 belonging to different ministries and government agencies, have not had their fitness certificates renewed for more than a decade in breach of rules, official data showed.

When the roads and highways are strewn with rundown and ramshackle vehicles, the syndicates are proving to be serious impediments to the introduction of new and comfortable vehicles in the private sector.

The High Court directs the government to stop plying of all unfit motor vehicles across the country.
