The exports of leather footwear from Bangladesh declined 4.28 per cent year-on-year in July-May of the ongoing financial year owing to lower orders from Europe, the main market, official figures showed. 

A lack of compliance is preventing the leather sector in Bangladesh from tapping its potential and expanding its footprint in the international market despite the availability of raw materials locally.

A Vietnamese company is set to invest around $100 million in Bangladesh's leather sector.

The industries minister issues instructions to close down tanneries which will fail to relocate from Hazaribagh to Savar in 72 hours. Allocation of plots in Savar industrial park will also be cancelled in such cases, according to the instructions.

It is heartening to note that we have had two consecutive years of good export earnings from the leather and leather goods sector.
