Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy’s former Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky’s reign of power over Dhaka's theatre scene and the country, as a whole, has been described as a “living dictator.” To prevent any similar figures from taking this kind of autocratic and illicit root in the future, a group of theatre activists has put forward several proposals.

Theatre activists and practitioners have called for an investigation into allegations of corruption, nepotism, misconduct, and political bias against Liaquat Ali Lucky, the former director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy who has recently resigned.

On Monday (August 12), Lucky submitted his resignation to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, as confirmed by Salahuddin Ahmed, Secretary of the Shilpakala Academy. The resignation was submitted via WhatsApp, the secretary informed The Daily Star.

Notably, Natyacharya Bulbul Chowdhury (January 1, 1919 - May 17, 1954) is considered the pioneer of modern dance in Bangladesh. He earned distinction as the first Muslim dancer of the British-era Indian subcontinent, and by the age of 30, he was honoured as the National Dancer of Pakistan.

Running from July 14 to July 15, the festival was inaugurated by BSA director Liaquat Ali Lucky, by lighting ceremonial lamps.

The notice read that he can begin his occupancy starting from the coming April 13, 2023 or his next word-day, according to his existing contract.
