Small and light engineering industries in Saidpur have helped the railway town emerge as a hub for producing valuable machinery and spare parts consumed by various sectors, thus cutting dependence on imports, saving foreign currencies and generating jobs for thousands.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announces 'Light Engineering' as the product of the year to give special attention to this sector for earning more foreign exchange through exporting various products.

Light engineering is showing potential as an emerging sector that supplies machinery to our principal foreign exchange earning garments manufacturing base. These small-scale factories make equipment used in washing, dyeing and finishing for use in the textile industry and are also involved in the process of transforming polythene into plastic film for packaging purposes.

Country's export earnings register a healthy growth of 13.73 percent totaling $2,749.34 million in this November against $2,417.43 million fetched during the corresponding period last year.
