Three former chief election commissioners (CECs) today said activities and services of national identity cards should remain with the Election Commission.

The Cabinet today approved in principle the draft, which will bring the national identity registration operation under Security Services Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, from Election Commission.

Speakers at a seminar in Dhaka urges the election commission to provide National ID cards to the Bangladeshi expatriates on an immediate basis.

The Election Commission is set to start handing over laminated NID cards this March to those who have been included in the voter list since 2013.

As part of its plan to complete providing smart NID cards to all voters by December next year, the Election Commission will go for a massive scale-distribution in 32 districts in the first week of next month.
