Onion prices have gone up in both wholesale and retail markets in Bangladesh in the span of a week owing to the higher cost of imported varieties of the kitchen staple.

Agriculture minister says

The government may allow onion import soon as the prices of the cooking ingredient are increasing in the local market, said Agriculture Secretary Wahida Akhtar.

The option to import onion will remain open now in order to keep the price of the cocking ingredient stable ahead of Ramadan, said Agriculture Secretary Md Sayedul Islam.

Bangladesh is likely to decline India’s repeated pleas to jump start onion exports as the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh currently has enough stock of it and the new variety of the tuber is expected to reach domestic market soon.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines will waive its cargo handling charge for any airlines that will carry imported onion for the sake of public interest.

Onion prices fell yesterday at both retail and wholesale markets due to an increased supply of early harvested onion and India's reduction in the minimum export price.
