"Dignity cannot be achieved through halting classes and examinations of students. Such a move does not go with teachers," she said. "Students will not accept it if you continue protests against the new pay scale, boycotting classes ... You have to keep education at public universities operational," she said.

Public university teachers across the country have begun an indefinite strike from this morning protesting the “government inaction” in removing their “pay disparity” despite being dubbed "illogical" by the finance minister and slammed by the prime minister.

An indefinite teachers' strike begins at all the public universities today in protest at the “government inaction” on fulfilling their demands, including removal of "discriminatory provisions" in the eighth national pay scale and retaining selection grade and time scale.

Mohammed Farashuddin firmly believes it was wise to drop the time scale and selection grade from the Eighth National Pay Scale.

It was supposed to get praise but all it generated was bitterness. The eighth National Pay Scale should have come as good news for the public servants as it will give them more money in the pocket and a number of other perks.

The government has decided to form a taskforce to sort out the anomalies in the new pay scale against which a section of civil servants is now protesting.
