Mother vessels can no longer berth directly at Payra

Just six months after Tk 6,500 crore was spent on capital dredging, Payra Port’s Rabnabad channel has lost much of its navigability, pushing up coal transport costs for the power plants in the area.

The Payra sea port’s first terminal is expected to be up and running by October, facilitating transport of goods from mother vessels and speeding up operations in the country’s third major seaport. 

Operations at Payra port have slowed down significantly following the temporary stoppage of coal imports for the Payra Thermal Power Plant in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali.

A foreign vessel with a depth of 10.2 metres arrived at the inner anchorage of Payra Port in Patuakhali on Thursday, the first anchoring of a larger water vessel at the country's third seaport.

Payra port, the third seaport in Bangladesh, expects to see the arrival of larger ships from the first week of April, according to a statement from the shipping ministry issued yesterday.

The port will open first terminal on first week of May

In a big leap forward, the Payra Port Authority yesterday signed a deal with a Belgium-based company to start capital dredging of the port's main channel to facilitate entry of large ships that cannot berth now at Chittagong and Mongla ports.
