Cox's Bazar is the main hub of salt production in the country and officials estimate 38,000 metric tonnes of salt are being produced each day.

The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has taken up a project to enhance local salt production so that the country becomes self-reliant in meeting its demand for the seasoning.

Salt farming in Bangladesh has reached the highest level this year since commercial production began in the country six decades ago thanks to favourable weather conditions.

Industries Minister Nurul Mazid Mahmud Humayun has said that the government will form a salt board in Cox’s Bazar and provide sufficient subsidy considering salt cultivation an agricultural pursuit.
