Interim government announces plans to limit visits to the coral-rich island

A fisherman was killed and two others injured when the Myanmar Navy opened fire on Bangladeshi fishing trawlers in the Bay of Bengal near St Martin’s Island on Wednesday, according to Teknaf UNO.

Amid growing skirmishes between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army across the border, movement of vessels between Teknaf and the Saint Martin’s Island has become risky, causing uncertainty over supply of food and other essentials to the island.

The coral island of St. Martin's is a place that usually evokes images of tranquillity, idyllic beaches, and unparalleled beauty. However, beneath this picturesque façade lies an unsettling reality—a burgeoning dog population that faces extreme cruelty and starvation, especially during the off-season from April to October. As tourism halts, these innocent animals, often fed by tourists during the peak season, are left to fend for themselves, leading to horrifying outcomes. 

All tourists were evacuated from St Martin's island before Cyclone Mocha hit, but most residents had to stay back. There are many reasons that contribute to the island and its residents’ vulnerabilities to climate change-induced natural disasters.
