Relocation process of all tanneries from the capital’s Hajaribagh to the designated tannery estate in Savar will be completed by this year, industries minister tells the parliament.

The government has served legal notices to the owners of 28 tanneries who are yet to start work to relocate their factories from Hazaribagh in the capital to the designated industrial park in Savar.

The industries minister issues instructions to close down tanneries which will fail to relocate from Hazaribagh to Savar in 72 hours. Allocation of plots in Savar industrial park will also be cancelled in such cases, according to the instructions.

The High Court issued a contempt rule against 10 tannery owners over charges of creating bars to implement a previous judgment regarding salvation of Buriganga river.
