Nine more officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) have been suspended for their alleged involvement in organising protests against the government's ordinance that dissolved the NBR and split it into two divisions.

Touted as a historic overhaul, the move has ignited debate over whether it will drive meaningful reform or merely deepen the layers of bureaucracy, given the NBR's persistent failure to meet its targets.

Historically, revenue efforts in Bangladesh have been seriously inadequate, which has constrained public expenditure.
