A five-member medical board has been formed to follow up the treatment of Titumir College student Siddiqur Rahman, whose eyes were damaged in “police excess” during a demonstration in Shahbagh on July 20.

The Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB), a network of 19 rights bodies, has demanded exemplary punishment of the policemen who took the action that led to the loss of eyesight of Titumir College student Siddiqur Rahman in Shahbagh.

A constable fired a tear gas shell at Titumir College student Siddiqur Rahman damaging his eyes, a committee probing the police action has found.

Doctors are likely to operate on Siddiqur's eyes on Friday.

It is still uncertain whether Titumir college student Siddiqur Rahman, whose eyes were damaged in police action in Shahbagh on July 20, would ever get his eyesight back.

A video clip shows that Siddiqur Rahman collapsed to the ground when a policeman shot a teargas canister directly at the agitating college students at Shahbagh on Thursday.

Thursday's incident at Shahbagh that led to Siddiqur Rahman's eye injuries could have been averted had the authorities told the agitating college students that their demands had already been met two days before.
