Bangladesh batter Towhid Hridoy has asked for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the Lanka Premier League in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) cricket operations manager Shahriar Nafees confirmed to the Daily Star on Monday. 

Needing six runs off the final over with five wickets in hand and Towhid Hridoy on 47 off 32 at the non-strikers’ end, it seemed an easy task for Bangladesh to win the first T20I against Afghanistan in Sylhet yesterday until Karim Janat’s hattrick suddenly changed the complexion of the game.

With just five away from victory, Bangladesh almost made a meal out of their chase, conceding a hattrick to Afghanistan pacer Karim Janat in the final over of the innings while chasing 154 in the first of the two-match T20I series at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Shakib Al Hasan and Hridoy contributed 37 for the fourth wicket but once the former departed to a loose shot, no big partnerships developed. Hridoy felt conditions were moderately good but the team did not bat well

“We expect these young cricketers to come in, and suddenly be world-beaters just like that. It is not possible. He (Towhid) has a lot of potential and a desire to learn. He has a high work ethic. I am excited for what he can do,” said Pothas.

Towhid Hridoy was shaped by unfortunate long before his first international appearance for Bangladesh national team. In 2013, a ‘fake’ cricket academy in Banasree embezzled money from him deceitfully. His family suffered as they had to mortgage land for a young Hridoy to join that academy but his career faced early setback. Batting with the likes of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim yesterday, Towhid showcased his own talent. He talked to The Daily Star’s Abdullah Al Mehdi on facing deceit when pursuing cricket, and support of his family through difficult times. He also talked about batting with Mushfiqur Rahim yesterday and gave his opinion on Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s comment during the BPL regarding his national team call up.

After an impressive run of form in the just-concluded Bangladesh Premier League for Sylhet Strikers, Towhid Hridoy was rewarded for his performances by being included in the Bangladesh squad for the upcoming white-ball series against England.
