Wage growth in Bangladesh fell slightly last month after climbing for 30 months since January 2022, according to official data.

Mrinal Biswas, a resident of Botiaghata upazila in Khulna, doesn’t find job opportunities every day. And when the 62-year-old fisheries worker is lucky to be employed, he earns Tk 500 per day.  

Although wage growth in Bangladesh has been slowly climbing since July last year, it has still remained below inflation for the 14th month consecutively, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

For the 10th consecutive month, monthly wage growth of workers has remained below inflation, a trend that indicates a worsening poverty situation as many people are being compelled to cut consumption amid falling real income.
