JU Chhatra Dal protests rape of pvt university student in Savar
Leaders and activists of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) today staged a sit-in on the campus, protesting the recent rape of a private university student in Savar.
The protest began around 4:00pm on the premises of JU Shaheed Minar.
Speaking at the programme, JCD leader Tanzila Hossain Boishakhi said, "Women are no longer safe anywhere in Bangladesh. The country's judicial system has collapsed, allowing rapists to roam free. Unless justice is ensured, no woman in the country will feel safe again."
Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babar, convener of JCD's JU unit, criticised what he described as the government's failure to deliver justice and condemned the media's indifference, alleging that the incident failed to get adequate media attention. "This reflects how broken our justice and media systems are," he said.
According to Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Jewel Mia, the 25-year-old university student was allegedly gang-raped in Savar's Kamalapur-Goalio area on October 14.
The victim filed a case with Savar Model Police Station on October 16, naming three accused -- Sohel Rosario, 37; Biplob Rosario, 40; and Mithu Biswas, 35, the OC said.
Of them, Mithu Biswas was arrested from Dhaka's Tejgaon area today, while the two others remain absconding, added the OC.
The protesters also demanded strict action to curb gender-based violence across the country.
