Yunus mourns Nobel Laureate Jimmy Carter’s death

Carter was true friend of Bangladesh, he says

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed his deep condolences today over the death of Nobel Laureate and former US President Jimmy Carter, describing him as a "true friend of Bangladesh."

In a message to US President Joseph R Biden, Yunus wrote, "With profound sadness, I write to extend my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Nobel Laureate President Jimmy Carter, a remarkable leader, a champion of human rights, and a tireless advocate for peace and democracy across the globe."

Yunus highlighted Carter's contributions to strengthening Bangladesh-US relations during his presidency and beyond.

He praised Carter's work through the Carter Center in Bangladesh, particularly in promoting women's empowerment, good governance, and democracy, calling it a testament to Carter's affection for the Bangladeshi people.

"We fondly recall his visit to Bangladesh in 1986, which was a source of great inspiration for our people," said Yunus.

Reflecting on their personal connection, Yunus said, "President Carter was not only an iconic figure in the United States and global politics but also a cherished friend of mine. Over the years, I had the distinct honour of meeting him on numerous occasions at Nobel Laureate gatherings. His unwavering commitment to human rights and social justice always encouraged me."

Yunus emphasised Carter's legacy of humility, wisdom, and his dedication to empowering people, saying it would inspire future generations.

"On behalf of the Government and the people of Bangladesh, I express our deepest condolences to the people of the United States and particularly to the bereaved family of President Carter. We also pray for the salvation of his departed soul," he added.
