Ducsu polls: Chhatra Union seeks disqualification of Shibir, Zulias Cizar
The Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Union has demanded the cancellation of nominations of Islami Chhatra Shibir and Zulias Cizar Talukdar for the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) election, scheduled for September 9.
In its press statement, the organisation accused the university authorities of repeatedly allowing Islami Chhatra Shibir to carry out political activities on campus. It recalled that in 1990, the Dhaka University Poribesh Parishad -- a coordinating platform of student organisations for liaising with the administration -- had reached a consensus that both Shibir and Jatiya Chhatra Samaj, student wing of the Jatiya Party, would be barred from political activities on the campus.
"Defying the decision of the Poribesh Parishad, the university administration has repeatedly created opportunities for Islami Chhatra Shibir to operate politically at the university," its joint conveners Masum Rana Joy and Salahuddin Ammar Niloy said in the statement.
The statement also read, "We demand the cancellation of Shibir candidates' nominations. As a terrorist organisation and an ally of war criminals and perpetrators of genocide, Islami Chhatra Shibir has no moral right to take part in the DUCSU election."
The student body also called for the cancellation of Zulias's nomination, who served as joint general secretary of Salimullah Muslim Hall Chhatra League committee in 2017.
"On the very first day, Zulias Cizar collected his nomination form. Although the authorities initially announced his disqualification amid controversy, they later reinstated his candidacy. We demand his immediate cancellation," the statement said.
