Frame specific policy to appoint VCs
University Grants Commission member Prof Muhammed Alamgir yesterday recommended a specific and transparent guideline to appoint vice chancellors at universities.
Prof Alamgir -- while attending a training programme for UGC officials -- said currently there are no specific guidelines on the appointment of VCs, pro-VCs and treasurers of universities.
"If they were appointed following a specific guideline, debates over such issues will reduce," he said.
He also suggested that the government ask for UGC's opinions while appointing a VC for any university.
During Tuesday's parliament session, opposition lawmakers slammed the government for failing to control corruption and irregularities at public universities. They alleged that VCs are appointed based on their political affiliations.
"There are criticisms about the activities of some vice chancellors... action is being taken against them. But it would not be wise to make wholesale comments regarding all vice chancellors," said Education Minister Dipu Moni in reply to the allegations raised.
