HC fines Bangladesh Islami University Tk 15.6 lakh for admitting students beyond UGG approval
The High Court today fined Tk 15.60 lakh to Bangladesh Islami University in Dhaka's Maniknagar for admitting students without the approvals of University Grants Commission (UGC) and Bangladesh Bar Council.
On April 23, 2014, the UGC issued a directive stating private universities will not be allowed to admit more than 50 students to their law faculties per semester. On October 1, 2019, the Bar Council issued a notification saying it will not issue registration cards beyond 50 LLB Honour's graduates from private universities per semester.
The Bar Council refused to issue registration cards to 52 students who passed LLB as the university authorities admitted them in violation of UGC decisions.
The university authorities have been directed to pay the fine to 52 students of the university, as they were not given registration cards for enrolment examinations.
Each of the 52 students will get Tk 30,000 from the university as compensation following the HC directive, Deputy Attorney General Nawroz M R Chowdhury and Assistant Attorney General Golam Sarwar Payel told The Daily Star.
BIU authorities will have to give updates to the HC by August 31 after complying with its directive, he said.
The HC bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman gave the order following a writ petition filed by 52 students challenging the Bar Council's refusal to issue registration cards to them.
