Happy birthday Jaya Ahsan!

Although award-winning actress Jaya Ahsan embarked on her career through TV plays, she has focused on films in recent years. She has made her mark in Bangladeshi films, but also established a presence in Kolkata. July 1 marks her birthday, and the noted actor shares her favourite birthday moments with The Daily Star.

How do you celebrate your birthdays?
Jaya : My birthday celebrations are usually very quiet, as I don't enjoy big parties. Often people don't even get a hint of my birthdays passing by. This year, I will be in USA during my birthday, and it will go by quietly as I will be busy with work.

What gifts do you usually receive?
Jaya: I usually receive a lot of flowers at my home. Most times I don't know who the senders are, and I guess it will be the same this year. I also receive other gifts from close ones. But unfortunately, I won't be in the country this year. 

How did you spend your birthdays when you were a child?
Jaya: My birthdays used to be really joyful! I am quite shy by nature, but would eagerly await my father's return home from work. He used to return home at 5, and after that I would cut the cake with my family.

What are the most precious gifts you have received from your family?
Jaya: When I was younger, my mother once took me to New Market and bought a book titled “Alonkarpuri”, written by Bonoful as my birthday present. It was such a wonderful book! It was also my first book, and that is why I cherish that present the most.

What makes you happiest on your birthdays now?
Jaya: Books are my all-time favourite gifts.

What are the most cherished presents you have received from your friends?
Jaya: When I was a little girl, my best friend gave me the wonderful gift of a clay stove. I was so happy! Later my other friends came over and gave me many presents, but that was the one I treasured the most.
