Ganga-Jamuna Fest to open September 4

53 troupes to participate in nine-day extravaganza

The Ganga-Jamuna Theatre and Cultural Festival, one of the major theatre festivals of the country, will see its curtains rise at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) on September 4.

The Ganga-Jamuna Theatre and Cultural Festival, one of the major theatre festivals of the country, will see its curtains rise at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) on September 4. Two towering figures of Bangladeshi and Indian theatre, Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Ferdausi Mazumdar will inaugurate the festival at the National Theatre Hall Auditorium, where Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will be chief guest, and will be joined by eminent thespians.

A total of 53 troupes from Bangladesh and India will take part in stage plays, dance, recitation, music and street theatre at the nine-day festival. Cultural programmes at the open stage will be held every day from 5pm-6:30pm, while two dramas each will be staged at the National Theatre Hall (NTH) and Experimental Theatre Hall (ETH) from 7pm.

On the opening evening, Sangstab (India) will stage "Chharigonga" while Prachyanat will stage "Tragedy Palashbari". On day two, Sangstab (India) will stage "Bhoothnath" (NTH) while Rajshahi's Anushilon Natya Dol will stage "Donddo" (ETH). Over the next days, Chittagong's Uttaradhikar will stage "Sampan Naiya" (NTH) while Natyacharcha will stage "Informer" (ETH); Loko Natya Dal (Siddheshwari) will stage "Kanjus" (NTH) and Desh Natok will stage "Dorpone Shorotshoshi" (ETH); Writtik (India) will stage "Adiraja" (NTH) and Aranyak will stage "Bhongobongo" (ETH); Anik (India) will stage "Ashokananda" (NTH) and Padatik Natya Sangsad will stage "Poramati" (ETH); Padatik Natya Sangsad, TSC will stage "Macbeth" (NTH) and Theatre, Bailey Road will stage "Kokilara" (ETH); Nagarik Natya Sampraday will stage "Dewan Gazi'r Kissa" (NTH) while Prangonemor will stage "Shesher Kobita" (ETH); and on the closing day, Dhaka Theatre will stage "Dhaboman" (NTH) while Mohakal Natya Sampraday will stage "Neelakhyan" (ETH).

The cultural affairs ministry of the Bangladesh government, the India Bangladesh Foundation and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy are assisting in the holding of the festival.
