Marking World Theatre Day 2016, Bangladesh Institute of Theatre Arts (BITA) and AFC jointly organised a seminar titled "Practicing Mother Tongue and Development Theatre: Context Bangladesh" on Sunday at the auditorium of Alliance Française de Chittagong.

Chief discussant at the seminar Dr. Ghosh of Bengali Departmemt of Dhaka University said, "We are pleased to speak English fluently but are reluctant to speak Bangla correctly."

He added that local dialects should be used in development theatre for the benefit of marginalised people.

Chittagong University's Dramatics Department teacher Dr. Irin Sultana read out the keynote paper on the theme.

Chittagong University Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Iftekhar said, "Practicing the mother tongue played a major role in the Cultural Revolution of China and the French revolution. The Language Movement in our country was the precursor of our Liberation War. So we all have to commit ourselves to using our mother tongue well in every sphere of life."

The seminar was also addressed by AFC Director Raphael Jaeger, CU Dramatics Department's Chairman Ashim Das, BITA executive director Shishir Dutta and AFC deputy director Dr. Gurupada Chakraborty.

At the start of the programme, BITA activists performed a short play titled "Meen Konya".
