First wheat shipment from Russia arrives at Chattogram port
A bulk carrier carrying 52,500 tonnes of wheat from Russia has anchored at the Kutubdia outer anchorage of Chattogram port.
The vessel, MV Parth, arrived with the first consignment under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement, according to a food ministry press release issued yesterday.
Earlier in January, the government signed a contract with Russia to import 200,000 tonnes of wheat. The sample testing has been completed, and preparations are underway to start unloading without delay.
Of the consignment, 31,500 tonnes will be discharged at Chattogram port, while the remaining 21,000 tonnes will be unloaded at Mongla port.
Alongside the Russian consignment, Bangladesh is also importing wheat from the United States under commercial contracts. Earlier this month, nearly 50,000 tonnes of US wheat were unloaded at Chattogram port, according to the ministry officials.
The food ministry said the imported wheat from both Russia and the US will be supplied to government warehouses for distribution under various social protection schemes.
