Pioneer sculptor of Bangladesh, Syed Abdullah Khalid, dies at a hospital in Dhaka. He was 75.

Pioneer sculptor of Bangladesh, Syed Abdullah Khalid, died at a hospital in Dhaka tonight. He was 75.

The Ekushey Padak-winning sculptor breathed his last around 11:45pm at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital.

The eminent sculptor was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), chronic lungs infection and diabetes for a long while, said his younger brother Dr. Syed Ahmed Mortada.

The sculptor was honoured with Ekushey Padak – the second highest civilian honour in the country - this year for his lifetime contributions to arts.

Syed Abdullah Khalid is predominantly recognised for his brilliant work “Aparajeyo Bangla”, one of the most iconic sculptures in our country (made between 1973-'79).
