Prof Mannan new UGC chairman

Prof Abdul Mannan, former vice-chancellor of Chittagong University, is appointed new chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh.

Prof Abdul Mannan, former vice-chancellor of Chittagong University, has been appointed new chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh.

Currently a professor at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Prof Mannan will replace Prof AK Azad Chowdhury, whose tenure would end tomorrow.

"I will sign the joining letter of UGC tomorrow. I expect to start my regular office from Sunday." he said to The Daily Star.

Earlier, President Abdul Hamid, chancellor of all universities in the country, signed in the order of his appointment, said sources.

The education ministry issued a circular yesterday in this regard.

He will be the 12th chairman of the UGC, the statutory apex body for higher education.

Completing his honours and masters from Dhaka University, Prof Mannan joined Department of Management at Chittagong University in Aug 1973 as a lecturer.
