Commemorating Muzharul Islam's Legacy: A centenary celebration and publication launch
A special program will be held to commemorate the 101st birth anniversary of Sthapatyacharya Muzharul Islam, the pioneering architect who shaped Bangladesh's architectural landscape. The event will feature the launch of a significant publication, "Muzharul Islam 1923-2012: A Folio of Built Works," and a panel discussion by distinguished speakers.
This important publication comprises essays and photographs that delve into Islam's works and architectural philosophy. It chronicles his crucial role in defining modern architectural culture in Bangladesh, from its nascent stages in the 1950s to its current prominence. Islam's life and work served as a critical lens through which the contemporary dynamic navigated modernism, modernity, westernization, tradition, and nation-building.
For over five decades, Muzharul Islam dedicated himself to shaping the scope and form of architectural culture in Bangladesh. He undertook the monumental task of establishing a modern yet distinctly Bengali architectural paradigm. His commitment to fostering a robust design culture in Bangladesh was deeply intertwined with his political and ethical convictions. Islam consistently advocated for responsible regional planning and large-scale design, recognizing their importance for a nation like Bangladesh.
The Architect Muzharul Islam Trust, in collaboration with the Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscapes and Settlements and Bengal Foundation, has organized this commemorative program. The event will feature a discussion with distinguished speakers, including Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, Professor Kazi Khaleed Ashraf, Architect Luva Nahid Choudhury, Architect Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury, Architect Saif Ul Haque, Architect Ehsan Khan, and Professor Nurur Rahman Khan. Following the discussion, a special documentary featuring rare footage, "Muzharul Islam: Vastukotha," will be screened. The highlight of the evening will be the launch of the publication, "Muzharul Islam 1923-2012: A Folio of Built Works."
