Warner Bros. has officially greenlit a sequel to the blockbuster hit “A Minecraft Movie,” which grossed nearly one billion dollars worldwide. Titled “Minecraft 2,” the film is currently in development and is set to premiere in theatres on July 23, 2027, the studio announced on Thursday.

Warner Bros. has officially greenlit a sequel to the blockbuster hit "A Minecraft Movie," which grossed nearly one billion dollars worldwide. Titled "Minecraft 2," the film is currently in development and is set to premiere in theatres on July 23, 2027, the studio announced on Thursday.

The follow-up will arrive about two years after the first "Minecraft," released in April, which became a box office sensation. Based on the globally popular video game, Warner Bros. and Legendary's PG-rated adventure shattered expectations with $162 million earned domestically and $312 million globally during its opening weekend. Bolstered by younger audiences and the viral "Chicken Jockey" trend, the film went on to collect $957 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2025, behind Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" ($1.03 billion).

Warner Bros. teased that details of the sequel "remain deep in the mine for now." Jared Hess will return to direct and co-write the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta. Hess, who directed the first instalment, worked with Jack Black and Jason Momoa in leading roles — following a group of misfits who are transported into a cubic world and guided by expert crafter Steve (played by Black).

Producers for "Minecraft 2" include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa.

The first film's monumental success marked a major turnaround for Warner Bros., following a string of underperforming releases such as "Joker: Folie à Deux," "Mickey 17," and "The Alto Knights." Since "A Minecraft Movie," the studio has delivered a streak of hits including "Sinners," "Final Destination: Bloodlines," "F1: The Movie" (distributed for Apple), "Superman," "Weapons," and "The Conjuring: Last Rites."

Warner Bros.' final release of the year, "One Battle After Another," directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has already generated $110 million in just two weeks — against its $130 million budget.
