Hundreds of farmers demonstrated in Rangpur’s Pirganj upazila yesterday, protesting the shortage of urea fertilizer during the peak of Aman season.

Hundreds of farmers, who are facing urea fertiliser crisis, blocked Rangpur-Dhaka highway for an hour this morning (September 10, 2022), saying that their cultivation will be affected if that fail to fertilise their cropland within a day or two.

Aman growers in the district are compelled to buy non-urea fertilisers at high prices during the ongoing cultivation season due to scanty supply of the important element.

The Ministry of Agriculture has instructed its field level officials across the country to ensure that farmers do not have to stand in line to buy fertilisers.

Planting of Aman seedlings has suffered a setback this season as it is so far 14 percent less than the target set by the government.

The government would consider giving diesel to farmers at subsidised prices,Agriculture Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said yesterday.
