2 die after being trampled during Miladunnabi procession in Chattogram: police

Two men died after they collapsed and were trampled during a procession brought out on the occasion of Eid-e-Miladunnabi in Chattogram city's Muradpur area today.

Police said they both fell sick due to excessive heat and were knocked down in the crowd, leading to the deaths.

Among the five people brought to the hospital, two were declared dead and the rest are undergoing treatment, said Brigadier General Md Toslim Uddin, director of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

The deceased were identified as Ayub Ali, 50, and Saiful Islam, 13.

The incident occurred around 12:00pm today, said police.

Quoting eyewitnesses who took the injured to the hospital, SI Nurul Alam Asheq, in charge of the CMCH police outpost, told The Daily Star about one of the deceased was a 50-year-old who fell ill due to heat and collapsed. "He was later taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 12:20pm. The body has been kept at the morgue."

Since 1974, the Anjuman-e-Rahmania Ahmadia Sunnia Trust has been organising Jashne Julus in Chattogram city every year on 12 Rabiul Awal, marking Eid-e-Miladunnabi, the prophet's birthday.This year, the procession was led by Allama Syed Muhammad Sabir and joined by hundreds of devotees.
