Google has announced it will invest $15 billion over five years to establish a major AI data centre hub in Andhra Pradesh, India. The 1-gigawatt facility in the port city of Visakhapatnam will represent Google's largest AI infrastructure investment outside the United States.

According to a report by Reuters on the matter, the project comes amid intense competition among technology companies expanding data centre capacity to meet growing demand for AI services. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian confirmed the scale of the investment at an event in New Delhi, while state officials had previously estimated the project's value at $10 billion.

The announcement aligns with Google's broader global expansion of data centres across Asia, including in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, adds the Reuters report. Other tech giants, including Microsoft and Amazon, have also committed billions to data centre infrastructure in India, which represents a key growth market with nearly one billion internet users.

Google's total data centre investment commitments for this year reportedly reach approximately $85 billion worldwide, reflecting the substantial computing power required for advanced AI systems.
