Google to go fully password-less; say hello to passkeys

Google has announced plans to revolutionise user authentication by phasing out traditional passwords in favor of passkeys. After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback earlier this year, the tech giant is now focusing on enhancing the accessibility of passkeys.

In a recent blog post, Google revealed that users will soon encounter an option to generate and utilize passkeys, streamlining their sign-in processes. Additionally, the "Skip password when possible" feature will be automatically enabled in Google account settings, signaling a shift away from the cumbersome task of juggling multiple passwords.

It's worth noting that the adoption of passkeys may be gradual, as is typical with the introduction of new technologies. In a testament to the growing popularity of this authentication method, both Uber and eBay have recently integrated passkeys into their platforms.

Passkeys offer a more efficient and secure way to access apps or websites. They leverage biometric data such as fingerprints, face scans, or screen lock PINs for authentication. Google asserts that passkeys are 40% quicker than traditional passwords and significantly reduce the risk of online threats like phishing.
