Bangladesh Police theatre troupe will stage the 19th show of their production ‘Abhishapta August’ this evening at Bangsbandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.

In memory of the grenade attack on August 21, 2004, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) arranged an installation art exhibition titled “August Repeated Attempts”.

The Bangladesh Mahila Samity (BMS) is set to reopen with "Lal Jomin" today. It is presented by Shunyan Repertory Theatre. The play, written by Mannan Hira and directed by Sudip Chakraborty will be staged for the 277th time.

Projonmo (a place for performance), will present their second and third productions on August 25, at Satyajit Ray Auditorium, ICCR, Kolkata, with Khudra Nrigostir Sangskritic Institute, Khagrachhari. For this, they have extended their gratitude to Lubna Marium, Artistic Director of SHADHONA, Bangladesh, and Jiten Chakma, Deputy Director of Khudra Nrigostir Sangskritic Institute, Khagrachhari. The first dance recital, “Jhalak”, will be presented by Bangladeshi students in Kolkata, under the direction of Md Hanif.

Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation has has demanded that all the auditoriums under Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, be reopened across the country. Addressing the Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the federation has sent a letter on August 12, requesting the organisation to resume staging plays and organizing other cultural events. 

Natyachakra, the oldest theatre troupe in the country, has been performing on stage for the last 49 years. They have successfully produced 54 plays. “Bhaddarnok” is one of the most staged and widely acclaimed plays by this prominent group.

Ekushey Padak awardee Ramendu Majumdar played an integral role in enriching the theatre arena in Bangladesh. By establishing the well-known troupe, Theatre, he has kept the theatre stage alive with his tireless efforts. Also known as one of the pioneers of Bangladesh’s theatre movement, the renowned cultural personality has been a part of most of the mass movements in the country. He is a two-time president of the International Theater Institute (ITI). He is currently the honourary president of the ITI. The Raas Leela is an important part of Manipuri culture. The term roughly means ‘dance of divine love and passion’. Dancers symbolise their spiritual love for Lord Krishna when they perform the Raas Leela. At 76, Krishnakumari Sinha is one of the most renowned artistes of this traditional art form in Bangladesh. For more than three decades, she has also been a guru to many. “I was born two days after the passing away of Rabindranath Tagore. Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA) will organise a virtual programme “18th North American Nazrul Convention”, showcasing their heartfelt respect to Bangladesh’s national poet Kazi Nazul Islam in a three-day programme, starting from July 30.

Dhaka Theater was founded on July 29, 1973, with the slogan, “Moulik Natok Monchayoner Maddhome Bangla Natoker Mukti”. Today marks the 48th founding anniversary of Dhaka Theatre.

Reticent painter and art teacher Arabinda Das Gupta breathed his last at Sylhet Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital this morning at 10:22 am today. He was 68 years old.

Abdullah Al Mamun was a stalwart in the fields of theatre, television, and cinema in Bangladesh. A celebrated personality in the arenas of theatre, television, and cinema, Abdullah Al Mamun left behind a dynamic collection of works to his credit. The brilliant plays he wrote in his time are being staged to this day by his theatre troupe, Theatre, and other theatre companies.

Prominent cultural activist, journalist, and media personality Muhammad Jahangir breathed his last on this day in 2019, after an uphill battle with cancer for years. He was the executive director of Centre for Development Communication and the coordinator of Nrityanchal, one of Bangladesh’s leading dance companies. Nrityanchal’s journey began in 2000, as a three-way collaborative effort between dancer duo Shibli Mohammad and Shamim Ara Nipa, along with him.
