Dinar Sultana Putul is a contemporary artist based in Bangladesh whose art practices focus on the quasi-scientific research and documentation of organic mediums and materials that explore various themes surrounding the nature. 

Prominent theatre troupe BotTola, in association with Jatrik, presented their play, “Marx in Soho” at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mohila Samity in Bailey Road, Dhaka, recently. The whimsical play by Howard Zinn has been translated into Bangla by writer Javed Hussen. The production is helmed by actor and director Naila Azad.

There is a girl crouching in the centre of the stage -- with a sketchbook and colors in her hand, she keeps on drawing. She knows that the society does not see her as "normal", she knows that she is not like most others, but that does not stop her from dreaming. Pori still draws.

Prangone Mor, one of the most celebrated theatre troupes in Bangladesh, staged their 31st production, “Condemned Cell”, at the Ganga-Jamuna Cultural Festival in the National Theatre Hall, Bangladesh Shikpakala Academy (BSA) recently. The play featured 24 artistes, including Ananta Hira, Nuna Afroz, Ramiz Raju, Awal Reza, Shuvo, Shishir, and Mofazzal, among others.

As the lights turn off, the stage starts to vibrate with the sound of footsteps -- and then the audience sees a beautiful assembly of choreographed dance which wonderfully portrays the passion and energy surrounding a brutal battlefield as young blood rises up to the occasion to fight for the independence, a war against the oppressor, and  true love for the nation.

Avid theatre activist and renowned musician Rahul Ananda is set to come back to the stage with the play “Circus Circus” today at the Ganga Jamuna Cultural fest 2021. Performed by his theatre troupe Prachyanat, the production will be staged today at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Commemorating the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of the Independence of Bangladesh, the Ganga Jamuna Cultural Festival is set to commence from October 1.

A cultural event showcasing the relationship between India and Bangladesh during the latter’s Liberation War in 1971 will be organised by the Indian Army’s Eastern Command in Kolkata from September 26 to 29.

The play, “A New Testament of Romeo and Juliet”, produced by the theatre troupe, Empty Space, will be staged at National Theatre Hall, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) today. The story is written Saymon Zakaria, with a critical lens towards William Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet".

The Bangladeshi theatre troupe Swapnadal has been invited to perform their monodrama, “Helen Keller” at the International Online Drama Festival 2021, organised by Baksa Bratya Natyajan, a prominent theatre organisation supported by the Indian Ministry of Culture.

Commemorating revered artist Sheikh Mohammed Sultan’s legacy, Bengal Shilpalay has organised the exhibition, “Imaginary of the Common: 50 years of Sultan’s Oeuvre”. The exhibition, which began on September 10, features a wide variety of works, starting from the maestro’s earliest charcoal drawings to his most famous paintings on watercolour and oil. 

“Shopnovuk” (The Dream Eater) the second production by repertory theatre group Up Stage, will premiere today at 7 pm at the Nilima Ibrahim Milonayoton, Bangladesh Mahila Samity. Based on Syed Shamsul Haque’s novel “Janak o Kalokofi” the production is directed by Saif Shumon.

Young painter Tariqul Islam depicts his deep respect and admiration for the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, through his works of art.

How does your work comment on current social and political issues?

In a candid conversation with The Daily Star, the multifaceted actor opens up about returning to theatre where he first made his name.

The revolution that litterateur and musical polymath Kazi Nazrul Islam brought to Bengali literature is unparalleled.  It is known that he joined the British-Indian Army in 1917 during World War I, when he was just 18. Barely out of his teen years, Nazrul travelled across India to join his regiment at Karachi.

Masum Reza is one of the most popular playwrights of today. He is also a prolific screenwriter, with hit television serials like “Ronger Manush” and “Vober Hat” to his credit. After some time away from the limelight, he is set to write and direct the stage play, “Janaker Anantajatra”, in association with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Tangail’s Bhasani Hall, a centre of entertainment and cultural events, has remained abandoned for the last three years, due to its worn-out condition.
